Headache: Treatment: Alternative Therapies
There are a number of non-pharamacological treatments available to treat headache. Some are used to prevent the onset of headaches, while others are used to treat an actual attack. At NeuroHealth, our experienced staff is equipped to conduct a variety of rehabilitative therapies and treatments to help reduce pain, build strength, and improve your overall quality of life.
Biofeedback
Biofeedback is extremely effective for significantly reducing both the frequency and severity of the majority of tension and migraine headaches.
Electronic biofeedback instruments connected to sensors on the body record and display continuous information (feedback) to a patient about the nature of a response to be learned. The patient tries to improve control of muscle tension and/or body temperature. The goal is to reduce symptoms associated with headache, such as muscle tension. A certified biofeedback professional provides necessary instruction and interpretation.
Cognitive Therapy
Simply put, cognitive therapy is the process where patients learn to control their thoughts. Cognitive therapists help headache sufferers to reduce negative thought processes, and learn stress-management skills, self-coping skills, and other tools that will help control their responses to situations that might trigger a headache.
Behavioral Therapy
Lifestyle changes can help reduce the frequency and severity of headaches. For example, dietary factors such as missing a meal, eating certain food, or drinking red wine may provoke headache attacks. Eating a healthy, balanced diet at regular intervals, avoiding known triggers and limiting caffeine and smoking are all examples of behavioral changes that can help you to control and perhaps even eliminate your headache symptoms over time. Likewise, implementing a daily exercise regimen and regulating sleep patterns can also go a long way to alleviate the frequency and severity of headaches.
Nutritional Supplements
Organic compounds like riboflavin (vitamin B2) and magnesium have been scientifically proven to help prevent headache pain.
